Staff Hardware Systems Engineer (Vehicle Architect)
Software Engineering, Other Engineering, IT · Full-time
San Francisco, CA, USA
Lead systems engineering across our autonomous vehicle platform. Own system-level requirements and architecture, and make the technical decisions that cross compute, networking, sensors, telematics, and power distribution. Translate product and safety goals into clear, testable requirements, and drive the design reviews and validation that prove them out end-to-end. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you set the direction and stay in the details.
Key Responsibilities
- Own systems engineering across the product.
- Architect the vehicle subsystems while evaluating cross-domain trade-offs.
- Decompose vehicle-level requirements down to subsystem and component level across compute, networking, sensors, telematics, power distribution, and articulate the rationale behind each.
- Partner with Mechanical Engineers to align on mechanical requirements - durability, vehicle dynamics, enclosures, sealing, etc.
- Support system performance analysis, deviation analysis, structured testing, debugging, and system improvements.
- Run cross-functional design reviews and orchestrate verification and validation of requirements with HW, SW/Autonomy, Functional Safety, and Test teams.
- Partner with Functional Safety on HARA, safety goals, and ASIL-driven technical safety requirement decomposition; ensure traceability from item definition to test.
- Interface with SW/Autonomy on interfaces, timing, compute, and networking budgets; own the system-of-systems view and arbitrate trade-offs across domains.
- Lead root-cause analysis for cross-domain issues surfaced in bring-up, DV, or on-vehicle; feed learnings back into requirements and architecture.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Computer Engineering
- 8+ years of systems engineering on vehicles or robots.
- Owned vehicle-level E/E architecture (power distribution, in-vehicle networks, compute) on a program that reached DV, PV, SOP or fleet deployment.
- Technical lead for systems engineers who built to your requirements and decisions.
- Wrote testable requirements and ran requirement-based V&V across HW, SW and test teams.
- Did practical ISO 26262 work: HARA, safety goals, ASIL decomposition.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience at an AV, robotaxi, autonomous trucking, or ADAS program at OEM/Tier-1.
- Built or grew a systems engineering team at an early-stage company.
- Track record of selecting, deploying, or replacing requirements management tooling.
- Exposure to HIL/SIL strategy and the instrumentation needed for on-vehicle verification.
- Experience working directly with powertrain, chassis, and/or HV traction systems on production vehicles.
- Heavy-duty truck or articulated vehicle experience.
