Slot Die Coating Engineer
Tandem PV
At Tandem PV we are a team of people who are passionate about building a more sustainable world by bringing more cost effective solar panels onto the market. We’re scaling metal-halide perovskite solar technology to make best-in-class mechanically stacked tandem modules. We have built efficient, durable cells, monolithic multi-cell submodules, and packaged modules with our scalable, low-cost process. Our next focus is expanding our team and building a pilot manufacturing facility. Sounds like a lot, right? It is, and that’s why we need you to join the team!
In this critical role, you will develop thin film solution deposition processes. You will be working closely with cross function partners to help set a path towards manufacturing of perovskite panels. You will interface directly with your colleagues on other teams to develop and execute experimental plans.
About the Role:
As a Slot Die Coating Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in developing and optimizing thin-film solution deposition processes for our perovskite module stack. You’ll work cross-functionally with R&D, process engineering, and operations teams to scale our coating capabilities from lab-scale to pilot-line production. Your contributions will directly influence product performance, manufacturing efficiency, and technology scalability.
What You’ll Do:
Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to improve coating processes, increase throughput, and optimize material performance
Troubleshoot and refine slot-die coating techniques—particularly for low-viscosity fluids in sheet-to-sheet formats
Lead experiments and process development initiatives for solution-based thin film deposition
Perform thin-film metrology and data analysis to evaluate coating quality and inform design iterations
Apply understanding of fluid dynamics, drying, and curing processes to improve uniformity and performance
Support the integration and operation of pilot production tools for scale-up
Calibrate, maintain, and—ideally—repair slot die coating tools to ensure consistent performance
Ensure lab safety and compliance, especially with wet chemistry and hazardous materials
Communicate clearly with cross-functional teams to align on R&D goals and manufacturing pathways
What You’ll Bring:
Hands-on experience with slot-die coating—preferably in an industrial setting, and ideally with low-viscosity fluids and sheet-to-sheet substrates
Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, and of drying and curing processes in thin-film coatings
Familiarity with perovskite materials and chemistry
Experience scaling coating processes to larger substrates or pilot production systems
Competence with calibrating, maintaining, and (preferably) fixing slot-die tools
Strong troubleshooting and tool maintenance skills
Wet-lab experience with a strong emphasis on safety and handling of hazardous chemicals
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Experience working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary R&D environment
Nice-to-haves:
Experience working at a solar or advanced materials company
Deep knowledge of halide perovskite devices
Prior work in a startup or pilot manufacturing environment
Tandem PV uses perovskite & silicon mechanically-stacked tandems to upgrade silicon solar panels, sharply decreasing installed systems costs, significantly increasing module manufacturing profit margins, and opening up vast new solar markets in the US and worldwide. TPV was co-founded by Stanford PhDs Colin Bailie and Chris Eberspacher; is advised by industry experts from Corning, First Solar, Vivint Solar, and Kateeva; has raised more than $50M in Series A funding. We were recently recognized as the Best Pre-Commercial Venture of 2025 by the Industry Growth Forum (IGF)
