Senior Avionics Mechanical Engineer
Ursa Major
The future of aerospace and defense starts here.
Ursa Major was founded to revolutionize how America and its allies access and apply high-performance propulsion, from hypersonics to solid rocket motors, satellite maneuvering and launch. We design and deliver propulsion and defense systems that solve the most urgent and critical national security demands.
Our products and technologies require an extraordinary team. A team that will mold tomorrow’s technologies while deploying today’s best. We are an intrinsically motivated team that has a passion for solving problems and empowering each other every day to develop our skills, knowing that there is always room for growth.
Our propulsion systems cannot function without sensors, actuators, controllers, and other electronic hardware functioning well together. As an Avionics Mechanical Engineer, you will work on designing the mechanical avionics components for Ursa’s rocket engines as well as for Ursa’s rocket engine test facility and numerous testing rigs. These components include both mechanical enclosures, structures and harnesses for avionics hardware for engines and support equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and validate mechanical components for avionics systems, including enclosures, mounting structures, and harnessing solutions for rocket engine and ground test hardware.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with electrical, propulsion, and test engineering teams to ensure integration and functionality of avionics components within propulsion systems and test facilities.
- Generate detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for fabrication, assembly, and installation of mechanical avionics hardware.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to the mechanical architecture of avionics systems from concept through deployment.
- Support testing activities by developing mechanical solutions for instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition systems across both engine and facility applications.
- Select materials, fasteners, and manufacturing processes appropriate for high-performance aerospace environments.
- Troubleshoot and iterate on mechanical designs in response to real-world test data and evolving system requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum B.S. in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years’ experience in mechanical design, preferably in aerospace, automotive or other high-performance environments.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, or similar).
- Experience designing mechanical components for electronics packaging, including thermal, structural and manufacturability considerations.
- Strong understanding of mechanical fundamentals including stress analysis, materials selection and vibration tolerance.
- Demonstrated ability to take a design from concept through to fabrication and testing.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to work effectively in a cross-disciplinary team environment.
Desired Experience:
- Experience with avionics or aerospace electronics packaging and integration.
- Familiarity with environmental requirements for flight or test hardware, including thermal cycling, vibration, shock and EMI shielding.
- Hands-on experience with engine test facilities or high-performance testing rigs.
- Knowledge of aerospace materials, fasteners, and fabrication techniques (CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, etc.)
- Exposure to wire harness design or routing for complex electromechanical systems.
- Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles in aerospace and defense applications.
- Familiarity with PLM systems (e.g. Windchill, Teamcenter) and version control processes.
