Job Purpose

The Sr. Manager, Software Engineering leads, scales, and develops a high-performing team of C++ software engineers responsible for building the core software that powers VulcanForms’ industrial metal additive manufacturing systems. This role combines strong technical leadership with deep expertise in modern C++ to guide the architecture, development, and optimization of complex geometry, control, and data-processing software.

By setting strategic direction, establishing engineering best practices, and driving a structured release and validation process, the Sr. Manager ensures our software is robust, scalable, and tightly integrated with advanced machine operations. This leader fosters an environment of innovation, continuous improvement, and craftsmanship—elevating both team performance and the capabilities of our manufacturing platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Grow and scale a team of C++ software engineers to meet evolving business needs and strategic objectives.
  • Provide hands-on technical mentorship, enabling engineers to succeed in developing complex geometry, control, and processing software.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-ownership engineering culture aligned with VulcanForms’ values of accountability, curiosity, and quality.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive technology roadmap across all internal software initiatives.
  • Define architectures and development strategies that support advanced machine operations, real-time computation, and complex geometry workflows.
  • Ensure software aligns with cross-functional requirements from Hardware, Controls, Manufacturing, Quality, and NPI teams.
  • Establish and manage a structured release process incorporating rigorous verification and validation testing.
  • Implement and maintain an effective bug tracking, prioritization, and resolution workflow to ensure reliability and timely delivery.
  • Drive automation initiatives that reduce user touch time and increase system throughput and efficiency.
  • Uphold coding standards, architecture guidelines, and performance optimization practices across the team.
  • Lead efforts to profile, benchmark, and improve performance, precision, and stability of the software stack.
  • Ensure detailed, comprehensive documentation of the entire codebase for long-term maintainability.
  • Improve user experience through intuitive software design and thoughtful automation.
  • Ensure robust handling, modification, and execution of increasingly complex geometries.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration between software, hardware, and manufacturing systems.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, including 3+ years leading or managing engineering teams.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Deep expertise in modern C++ (C++14 or later), including architecture, optimization, debugging, and performance tuning of complex systems.
  • Proven success managing teams working in large, performance-critical codebases.
  • Experience developing software that interacts with or controls hardware, robotics, automation systems, or high-performance compute environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement structured release processes, testing practices, and software quality standards.
  • Strong technical communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, manufacturing, and leadership teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with additive manufacturing, CAD/CAM systems, or 3D geometry workflows.
  • Background in real-time computation, multithreaded programming, simulation, or geometry modeling (e.g., NURBS, BREP).
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations and driving significant improvements in process, code quality, and team velocity.
  • Familiarity with GPU computing, rendering, or computational geometry frameworks.
