Job Purpose
The Director of Additive Machine Build will lead build, installation, commissioning and qualification of new additive capacity for VulcanForms. The Director, Additive Machine Build will be responsible for scaling and integrating the current GEN3 printer engineering, build, and commissioning team. They manage a ~$50M capex budget and transition the organization from relying on subject-matter experts to one that scales with written procedures and trained employees. This position will start focused on GEN3 machine build at headquarters in 2026 and expand to installing & building additive capacity at all VulcanForms sites.
This leader will design the foundational processes, workforce models, and continuous improvement systems required to support this company’s rapid expansion, from scaling our printer capacity at one site to scaling capacity at all VulcanForms sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Scale Devens’ machine build organization to support the growth of our printer capacity.
- Formalize the current build process with documented assembly procedures to standardize work to train machine build crews on multiple shifts at multiple sites.
- Drive cycle time and cost reductions in procurement, build, commissioning, and qualification of additive equipment.
- Partner with Operations and Engineering teams to implement upgrades to the fleet of printers to continuously drive OEE performance.
- Drive a proactive safety culture with daily safety walks, increased near-miss reporting, and elimination of repeat HSSE findings.
- Implement a disciplined quality environment with strong documentation, SPC readiness, and continuous improvement of work instructions.
- Develop scalable operating systems and playbooks that allow Devens build process to serve as the model for future sites.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive experience in manufacturing and/or capital equipment build leadership within a complex technical production environment, preferably in aerospace, medical, additive, or consumer goods.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Experience with Quality Management Systems (AS9100D, ISO9001, etc.), good documentation practices (GDP), and statistical process control (SPC) methodologies.
- Proven senior leadership experience, including experience managing leaders and multi-dimensional teams.
- Proven ability to implement lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, 5S, TPM, Kanban boards, etc.)
- Proven experience in a high-growth environment with the ability to build processes from scratch.
- Experience in identifying and implementing capital upgrades and process flow improvements to manufacturing facilities.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and safety standards relevant to manufacturing.
VulcanForms offers a competitive salary and equity package. Actual compensation is based on factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience. In addition, VulcanForms provides comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; generous paid time off; and a 401(k) plan with company match.
The annual base salary range for this position is $171,000 to $220,000.
