Position Description

Watchmaker is inviting applications for the full-time position of Facilities Specialist (Health and Safety Focused).

The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced working environment and contribute directly to our company culture and success. This is an onsite/in-office position.

This position reports directly to the Facilities Team Lead and will have a focus on the maintenance and execution of our Health and Safety Program. In addition this position will be responsible for ensuring that all facilities and equipment operate efficiently and comply with all quality and regulatory requirements.

Health and Safety Key Responsibilities

Safety Program Management:

  • Maintain safety policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and guidelines in alignment with OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulatory requirements.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation:

  • Conduct regular hazard assessments and risk analyses of Watchmaker’s processes, including laboratory and manufacturing operations.
  • Identify potential safety risks related to biological agents, chemicals, and equipment, and implement effective controls.

Training and Awareness:

  • Maintain health and safety training programs for employees, focusing on hazard communication, emergency response, and safe handling of biological and chemical materials.
  • Promote a culture of safety through continuous education, engagement, and communication.

Incident Management and Investigation:

  • Lead investigations into workplace incidents, injuries, or near-misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain detailed records of incidents and ensure timely reporting to regulatory bodies as required.

Regulatory Compliance and Auditing:

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, CDC, and EPA standards related to biotechnology operations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, and processes.
  • Maintain SDS for the business for both internal materials and commercial products.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement:

  • Work closely with a cross functional team to integrate safety practices into daily operations.
  • Stay updated on emerging safety trends, technologies, and regulations, and implement improvements accordingly.

Facilities Key Responsibilities

  • Inspects and performs periodic and emergency maintenance and calibration on assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Ensures assigned facilities and equipment are ready for regular business and special events.
  • Maintains files of warranties, records, licenses, inspections, service agreements, and contracts for various pieces of equipment.
  • Maintains the inventory, storage, and distribution of equipment.
  • Provides recommendations for departmental purchases of new equipment with input to Procurement for sourcing.
  • Collaborates with other appropriate management staff to prepare and implement budgets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements

The candidate should have at minimum a BS degree with 0 to 3 years experience in relevant industry. Experience in biotech and a start-up environment are highly desirable.

The following skills and experience are requirements for the position:

  • Experience working in a regulated environment, specifically as it pertains to Health and Safety standards
  • Experience with risk management and mitigation strategies to deal with areas of high risk.
  • Experience with auditing processes and work environments to ensure compliance with current health and safety standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to multitask, be able to work at a high standard, perform consistently under pressure along with pre-determined deadlines, and work without supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Excellent communication and personal task management skills and a high level of self-motivation and initiative.
  • A creative and disciplined approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent computer literacy including applications skills, especially with spreadsheets
  • Experience with equipment management systems, ERP systems, and/or accounting systems will be an advantage
  • Experience working under Quality Management Systems
  • A good knowledge of local vendors of laboratory equipment, consumables, chemicals, and reagents etc. will be an advantage

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work in laboratory and manufacturing environments, which may require wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a science-related background preferred
  • 3 years experience in relevant industry

Compensation

The base compensation for the Facilities Specialist role starts at $60,000 - $70,000 + bonus + equity; actual pay will be adjusted based on skills and experience. Employees are eligible for Flexible Time Off, Holidays, employer covers 75% of base medical plan with buy-up options, EAP (employee assistance program), employer paid dental, employer paid vision, employer paid $25,000 life/AD&D policy, paid parental leave, and a 401(k) retirement plan with a 4% match.
